Hey all, late last night I was playing l4d2 and my computer crashed, and when it restarted I was getting purple/green artifacts in my bios and post up screen. As I got into the OS, it was still full of artifacts and the resolution was very very very low. Did system restore and reinstalled graphics drivers and no luck. I think the fact that I have artifacts in the bios/post screen are a pretty good sign my card just fried.

Anyways, I was looking in the 200 dollars range and it looks like the GTX 260 core 216 is the best bang for the buck. Any other useful opinions?

dunno about anything else. but thought would stand up and say yay for the 260. the c216 will be even better to im sure.

I had the same thing happen to me. Is your card not under warranty anymore or something? The first thing I'd do is try returning it for a replacement (free minus your cost of shipping it in). Although what they send you back isn't always golden...my card was doing something similar to what yours was on a consistent basis before I sent the card in. My computer has once done the garbled graphics thing since I got the new card back Confused, but the problem went away when I rebooted and hasn't come back. But, we shall see if it happens again. At which point will be my second RMA. Although having the warranty there is still better than nothing. This has been my only ever bad experience with a graphics card.

Do you currently have an 8800GT perhaps? Two glitchy cards in a row for me leads me to think the chipset has a very short lifespan to it or something (or is insufficiently cooled). I know it's the card too because:
A) I haven't had any problems up until just recently (owned one for over a year)
B) A different card in it during the interim didn't result in the garbled graphics coming up when I'm doing something intensive (like video-games or ultra-porn)

In terms of which card to pick...all the new ones are equally power hungry monsters so you'll have to deal with that. But the GTX 260 is a good bang for the buck I hear ya.

lol @ ultra-porn.

I've had my 8800gts for a couple years now with no problems. I keep it overclocked at 555/870 too.

Bought two EVGA 8800GTX's. Then bought a B-Stock one (tri-sli). Artifacting occured almost immediately. RMA'ed it, the one they sent back did the same thing. Sent it back and they gave me my money back.
One of my original 8800GTX's started showing artifacts a few months back, but I forgot to get the warranty on it! Doh...
So, two 8800GTX's in the bag for me.

yeah, apparently i did not register within the 30 days of my purchase, so they didn't lifetime warranty it. bullshit lol

so i went and got the 260 core 216 evga from newegg, 200 dollars

considering how i spent almost 400 on my 8800gtx 3 years ago and this one is better than that for half the price, i can't be unhappy i guess. ..

but i am going through gaming withdrawal waiting for this thing to arrive Sad

Yea I just decided to buy another card myself while I'm waiting on my (now second) RMA. I'll use the one they send back as a spare. I have the money to spare so it's no biggie. Computer components just seem to be getting shittier and shittier reliability wise as time goes on though. Just in the last year I've had 4 RMA's between 2 bad motherboards and 2 bad graphics cards. Up until this year I've never had anything go bad on me. Or maybe it's just the odds catching up to me...I dunno.

I have an GeForce 8600M GS in my laptop and I got exactly the same problem starting the other night that Ben had with the artifacts only it wouldn't even reach the login screen where it would crash and restart. Then I got it to kinda work again, but I got the artifacts again while looking at a photo(really???) and it crashed and restarted. HP is really dumb for only putting one small vent into this laptop and nvidia fails horribly for screwing up on a whole family of GPUs. 70-75 degrees C while idling???

Time for a new laptop...and I'm never buying HP laptops ever again.

This is so weird and makes me wonder why all your cards are showing artifacts. Like Greg, I've had my 8800GTS 320mb for 3 years and is still going strong, starting to show its age on new games but has no trouble with the Crysis generation of games.

Comes to mind is either something similar in the motherboard design or using cheap PSU's or maybe something as simple as heat ???

Nope, just two bad cards in a row. I haven't had any issues with my new 9800GT going on several months now. Most likely a combination of shitty design (the single-slot 8800GTs ran quite hot) and being manufactured in China. It had a lifetime warranty, so I never felt like complicating it by installing a better heatsink, looking for cold/cracked solder, etc.

As an added bonus, due to EVGA's apparent lack of QC in their RMA department, they were nice enough to send me a NEW 9800GTX on the second return. It's been sitting in my closet as a spare because I don't feel like dropping $xxx to buy a higher rated power supply in order to run it. No current games I play would benefit anyway. I could maybe use it as a space-heater though...
