With the boon of online gaming and the proliferation of broadband the terrible evil that is lag has slowly been dieing. But there is a second side to the blade and it cuts at one of the PC communities greatest contribution to gaming as a whole.
The LAN party. A close proximity location, filled with people you may or may not have played with before, a semi, or very competitive setting where you don't' need to worry about lag, where having a Mic is yelling to the person behind you to cover you while you flank.
Where the hacker, if he does show his face, would beg, no he would pray to a god he doesn't even believe in, to be banned instead of the consequences that do occur. (Sledgehammer at the door, it's happened before, and it is a bitter-sweet sight to behold.)
Will you see such online? Will you ever be able to high five a complete stranger online after winning a hard fought battle? No you cna only do it at a LAN, and such events are a bonding experience with your fellow man that EVERYONE should experience, if at least once.
All anyone ever hears about is Quakecon, Blizcon, PAX, these huge ten-thousand turnout parties that are less and less casual competitive and grassroots, and more of a coliseum level completive playing field. We in general have no chance of being those great titans and thus don't attend.
But what if there were smaller Venues? Ones that don't attract the "gods of gaming" and particularly don't' revolve around games that have EA, BLizzard, Epic, or ID running the show and being the whole draw for the crowd?
There are, and YOU need to look, then promote them yourselves! Sure turning a 20 man venue to a 120 man kinda sounds hypocritical, but it's still below the level of needing an entire city block closed off so we can drag our box's into a dully lit hole in the wall for some fight club level brutality.
If you know of a LAN party, post about it! Hell I'll even put it on the front page! Just let us know.
Who knows, maybe the person next to you will be me!
LAN name: (Put the official title here, also in topic)
Location: (Start with the state, then city. Because there's a lot of towns called Paris, or ******city, and it helps a person looking for a LAN if they know if it's in their state first, so they don't' get all excited)
Date: (Probably the most important part, people need a day, and a starting hour, so tehy can show up 2 hours early and get the best non reserved spot, next to the admins so they can throw stuff at them, cause admins suck )
What to bring: (Some smaller venues do provide a few "rental" rigs. But if there isn't they need to know, also if possible let people know about possible power limits. not all LAN venues can handle 20 quad core multi GPU powered rigs running a pair of 24"CRTs )
Dress code: (If any, though its' a good idea to bring a pair of spare clothes with you anyway, just in case)
Entrance fee: (Also if any, nothing sucks more than having $10 in your back pocket and having a fee of $30) _________________

Funny you post this, because I think I posted about 2 of these and got nobody here to attend. It might be due to my location in middle-of-nowhere Midwest, but I think it's more or less LAN parties are places for "real" friends to gather and not online acquaintances. I mean...I don't think I'd ever drive more than about an hour for a LAN personally.
But yes, I agree that the seemingly dying LAN is something all gamers should experience. It's one thing to talk shit and spam to faceless gamers you meet online...but it's even more of a treat to do it in person! I've earned the title of "worst mic-spammer" at each and every LAN I've attended, and it is one I'm very proud of . Personally I have three regular LANs I attend each year. Two of which are a biannual public LAN of about 100 at the Holmes Student Center of Northern Illinois University. The third is a private LAN of about 20 at my friend's farm. Both are equally enjoyable experiences. The only downside is that half the LAN events consist of DotA (God how I fucking hate DotA )...but I can always find somebody that wants to play something else. TF2 has fortunately caught on big time over the last year or so. We've also had Left 4 Dead tournaments and, of course, the Unreal Tournament! _________________

| Yeah I love having these things, but mike and ben are the closest people to me, and theyre about 3+ hours away. Nothing can beat a good LAN party, but I'm getting tired of playing Empire Earth and crappy games of BF2 and attempts at CSS. They just don't understand how much fun TF2 can be at these things. |

Problem is, people are scared of TF2, pure and damn simple. They are SCARED of a non-serious looking game. One where everything is drab and grey. Where everyone isn't built like a brick shit house, and one where meele isn't a valid form of attack.
Narwhal, you don't have many other FG members in your area from what I can gather, let alone members old enough to be allowed to roadtrip. Still, a little front page exposure could get us a LOT of casual exposure purely form searches on Google. Front page exposure is choice stuff. _________________

If anybody is interested, Delta Chi fraternity at my college, Kettering University (Flint, MI), holds a massive LAN party twice a year (This Winter, it's January 15 - 18). I'm actually part of a different fraternity on campus, but a lot of people on campus know me and these guys know me really well. Plus, I always show up to their LAN parties. TF2, UT04, Starcraft, Counter-Strike, Left 4 Dead, and Garry's Mod are the usual suspects.
Last year, there was a huge incident with DOS games when we came across a really old game called "Astrotit". We couldn't resist putting that damn thing on the projector. It's always a good time.
If you live close by, you can give me a heads up on it. The LAN party lasts for three days. So there's always a huge time space. You can chill at my fraternity or my apartment if you need a place to stay.
Also, there's a place in downtown Grand Rapids dedicated to LAN gaming. If you are interested in that. _________________

Nice F3rn22 having one the same time I'm having one.
KansasLan is one I've had a bit of a hand in for almost a decade now, from the first on being 8 people to the last one being almost 20, and this next one looking to be about 50+ the numbers have wavered greatly but the games remain the same. CSS, UT3, Crysis, CoDMW, L4D/2... gonna push for a TF2 server this go round too. Since we'll have enough people we hope for a server.

I still remember. . . 5 years ago I had a haircut with the UT2004 logo in the back of my head. _________________

Its like coming home for the first time to meet your real family after finding out your adopted. You feel like you fit in, but everybody still scares the bejezuz out of ya. |
