Hey guys, Im very lazy when it comes to researching programs and whatnot. What do you use to customize your own maps???

For Source based games you will want to use the free Hammer editor which can be found under your Steam > Tools. Select all 3 of the SDK options and then just open the first SDK Base.

You will also want to get Crafty, BSPView, GFCScape, VMEX, Pakrat and a few other tools I can not think of right now which allow you to edit and view and decompile maps, textures, wad files.

Also check out tf2maps.net for some tutorials as they have tonnes of great info there for TF2 mapping.
